Manchester United or the dictatorship of short-term results

Manchester United is Alex Ferguson and Alex Ferguson is Manchester United. Many football fans, and especially Manchester United fans, recognize that Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager in Manchester United history and even in the English Premier League history. But, Manchester United fans were orphaned in 2013, when “Fergie” took a well-deserved retirement.

After a blessed era of 37 titles in 27 years Manchester United is going through a crisis where trophies are rare. Thus, in 8 years, not a single Champions League final and not a single championship won. As football lovers know, a team goes through good times and bad, and that’s what makes football and the fans so beautiful; the boat can be shaken, the sailors remain on board.

Yet a big club like Manchester United cannot afford to be a normal club. This club which saw the birth of David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, George Best cannot afford to play supporting roles in the world of football. The leaders understood this well. So, to remedy the situation, no less than 4 coaches have followed one another within the club in barely 8 years (Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjaer).

These successive changes must turn heads these Mancunians who had the same captain on board for 27 years. But beyond this waltz of coaches, are these successive changes the solution to restore Manchester United to its glory?

When Alex Ferguson started coaching Manchester United in 1986, he suffered a lot of criticism and was almost sent off. During the 1985 season Manchester United finished 4th and from 1986 when he took office, Fergusson finished 11th in the championship. It took him 6 years to win his first championship, which is the time it took for Manchester United to change coaches 4 times between 2013 and 2019 ...

You might think that Manchester United weren't the same club during the 1980s and now they have to live up to the stature Ferguson built in 27 years. It’s not wrong to say that Ferguson won his bet and knocked Liverpool from their perch, becoming the club having won the most league in England. However, at the beginning of the 1980s Manchester United was already a big club with 7 championships won, for as many vice-champions and a champions league won in 1968. Despite the criticisms, the doubts, the impatience, the Mancunian supporters and leaders gave Ferguson the time and confidence to build a team, a mindset and a style that will make Manchester United the winning machine of the 1990s, 2000s.

Thus, this eagerness is not explained only by the stature of Manchester United, it is explained by what football has become: a constant race where losing is no longer part of the game. The immediacy of the results pushes the clubs to make decisions and

promote the short term at the expense of the development of a style of play, effective management ...

Manchester United fans and managers desire a new Ferguson, but they themselves prevent it from appearing and this is ultimately the great evil in football and in Manchester United...

Are long-term coaches like Ferguson doomed to disappear to make way for short-term ambitions and erasable, replaceable coaches?

    This is the way current football is handled, the managers of the teams demand immediate results from the head coach. The romanticism in football began to die precisely around the time when Ferguson ended his tenure in the Manchester. Also, nowadays the football like every other business revolves around selling a product or service and pleasing their clients. In the case of football, the managers need to have the best players or those that can make your team win to please their fans and sponsors.

      Supporters and executives need to understand that it takes time to make a team. For example, Real Madrid signed in 2009 Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema. However, this team did not start to be very efficient and to win until 4, 5 years later!

    I believe that the mindset of many clubs has to change regarding long term goals of the club. Many supporters critize the coaches after several consecutive results, and very few clubs actually provide the confidence and patience that some coaches need in order to create a solid team that can win on the long run. I believe it's rare that coaches can turn 360 a club that os doing very bad, and even if they do, it doesn't last. I believe clubs should promote way more the patience on coaches to have time to build solid teams, not just get 1 season titles, but actually build systems that can provide good results for seasons to come.

      The clubs that are winning now are the clubs that are built over the long term. Bayern in Germany, Manchester City in England. These clubs take their time to create automatisms between players and have a team that plays together.

      I totally agree with you Sebastian. Switching coaches all the time usually don't work. The only case that I know that has work recently is when Chelsea signed Tuchel in mid-season, that was a complete sucess because Lampard was not doing well. They ended up winning the Champions League with Tuchel. For example, now that Barça has signed Xavi, the best spanish player in history, we have to trust him and support him as his knowledge of football fits perfect with how Barça plays. Even though he might not be winning many games because the players are not the best (for a team such as Barça) he will eventually put Barça where we deserve to be.

    Nowadays in soccer the coaches have less margin of error. Currently there is so much money at stake that, for example, Barça or Manchester United cannot afford to be left out of the Champions League, so if a coach is practicing good football and it seems that things can get better, but results have not just emerged, most likely they will have to go anyway.
    And so it is today that it is more difficult to see coaches who are on a team for 10 years. The world of football is losing patience and confidence in the coaches, and all for short-term results

    Owners have too much power now. Most owners look at the club as a cash cow and when a manager fails to meet certain expectations such as getting a Champions league spot, he gets the sack, no matter how well the team has looked. There is an overall lack of vision for the future. Ferguson himself said that is is unlikely that another manager will reach his heights, simply because nobody gets the change to establish a long term legacy. By today's standards Ferguson would have been sacked inbetween 2003 and 2006 since he didn't win any leagues in those years. But the club knew they were in a rebuilding phase and their patience was rewarded with the best team that English football has ever seen, winning three leagues in a row from 2007-09 and winning the Champions league in 08.
