Will Esport be the first big business industry in the sport world ?

Will Esport be the first big business industry in the sport world ? Esport can be considered a new sport in its own right? And can it be a substitute for the traditional sport? Is Esport a sport ? Many unanswered questions that are needed to answer. Starting in the 1980s, Esport had its first games and developed them on the internet, 10 years later. But if we have to give eSport a “birth date”, it would be in May 1997 with the Quake "Red Annihilation" competition. The ESport taken its model on the Anglo-Saxon sport type of the XIXᵉ century. And the practice of esports was really enjoyed by the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. But this new type of sport has spread in an intensive way. Indeed, originally multiplayer video games were limited to local games between friends. But these games have become so popular that they have grown to include professional players and teams. These players were subsequently sponsored in a similar way to traditional sports. So it created a real market around Esports.

Esports vs Sports - How the industries compare.

Now how does esport work? The term "electronic sport" refers to the practice of competitive video games. Games where the player competes alone or in a team against other players. Now can we really associate esport with traditional sport that remains an important debate. The first and most debated difference is that traditional sport puts our human body in motion while esport does not move our body. However, for most people, esports is not considered a sport, but more of a people, as there is no "physical activity". But, when we look at games like Startcraft, competitions require a healthy lifestyle and regular training. Indeed, electronic games require an attention capacity that is also found in traditional sports. Also, esport requires a team as in traditional sports such as football, rugby or cricket. So we have team spirit, the effort of the whole team to win the competition. However, esports combined with sports can be a very good alternative. Practised in parallel with the video game, sports activity is particularly beneficial, for your body of course, but not only. It allows you to perform even better against your opponents in the game. Isn't that nice?

The construction of this team is similar to that of a traditional sports team. It is a question of studying the market to adapt the choice to the means, to compose a team to reach a precise objective, to surround the players with competent professionals, to build an image with your community on the social networks. But also, provide the esport team with the technical means to succeed and find sponsors. The esport has so much impact that it has been registered under a specific law in 1901 so that the team is in good standing. At least two founders must represent this association: a president and a treasurer. In terms of business, the global eSports market is expected to grow strongly through 2024, after a very slight decline in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The market is expected to grow at 11.1% between 2019 and 2024, from $958 million to $1.62 billion, which is not insignificant. In comparison to the sport business market the field of traditional sports is not expanding and does not dominate in the face of esport.

So we can ask ourselves if the traditional sport will endure in the face of the esport business?

  1. I think that eSport will never be able to replace the real Sport, but now the situation with the Covid-19 pandemic is very beneficial to eSports and on famous livestream platform Newzoo viewing percentage increased for 20% from 2019. ESports got so much success, but traditional sports are with us from Ancient times and can not be replaceable and are much more useful for our health than from sitting on a chair and playing eSports.

    1. I agree with you, I think real sports will always be number 1 and will never be replaced. A big reason being live matches, which is something very different in esports, as everybody watches from home, while real sports are played in huge stadiums, where the teams can generate way more money. It is interesting to think about the future and how it will look like with the introduction of the metaverse and virtual reality. With these technologies, we could probbably see a very huge shift towards digital sports, but still then I don't see esports taking over traditional sports.

    2. Totally agree with Abota, Esports will never be the same as Real sports, the majority of people prefer to see a football match rather than a LOL game. Esports are getting very famous and when the covid 19 appeared people watched lots of lifestream (esports) but it is for a reduced number of the whole audience in the world. Normally are young people that prefer to see esports.

  2. I believe that Esports will never become as important as traditional sports, much less replace them. I personally don't consider Esport to be a real sport since from my point of view Esport doesn't provide half of the benefits that sport does. So, by no means do I think that sport will disappear in front of Esport, because many people love to move, be active and practice sport outdoors, and doing this with Esport is practically impossible. Even so, I do think it is a good idea to combine Esports with traditional sports as it can give you a plus, but above all never abandoning the "real sport".

  3. I think so! I am not even going to give away the obvious reason for my argument, which is Covid-19 and how technology in the pandemic has gained a lot of weight in our daily life, therefore, resulting in more people getting involved with video games. I believe it is all about the competence. If you stop and think, is it easier to go professional in football, or be competent in any video game? It is extremely hard to go professional in football, according to studies, only one out of 100 kids in football academies can make it to the top. If we see some other sport, it is very expensive to even practice it, which is the case of hockey, tennis or F1. My point is, it is way easier to get the sources and start practicing an electronic sport, with more chances to go professional than the conventional ones. If you add this to the fact that with digital platforms like Twich, electronic sports are growing and just becoming more and more attractive to the younger generations. This industry of e-Sports will inevitably become the first big business in the sports world.

It is true that there are more and more competitions and Esports fans. But from my point of view it will never be the same as real life sports. For me virtual sports lose all the fun because you can not enjoy them as they really are and at the same time create me claustrophobia by the theme of always being in the same place, I find it more exciting to move to different places to practice or see the different sports.

  6. Most of the big teams in the world have entered the esports industry and a lot of money is made from computers. As you know, most teams have produced their own bitcoin currency. Although e-sports is not popular at the moment, it will be very popular in the future as everything will be with technology in the future. I believe it will be like Bitcoin and everyone will be an esports player in the future...
